The benefits and risks of portable heaters 

During the winter months nursing homes often need to provide additional space heaters to ensure that their residents stay warm. This was especially important this previous winter as it was one of the coldest in recent memory. At AIANO we saw a particularly high demand this last winter for heater guards for portable oil filled radiators and convector heaters for residential care homes. These heaters are an effective way of providing extra heat during a cold snap. However, they present a health and safety challenge, and because they can be moved around they can easily become an obstacle. AIANO offers a bespoke service to manufacture free-standing guards that completely cover these portable heaters. Inside the guard we weld special stabilizers to help hold the guard in position in case someone accidentally knocks against it.

Westgate Healthcare is one such residential care home provider who use portable oil-filled radiators to help keep residents warm during extra cold spells. Westgate Healthcare is an important provider of residential healthcare, primarily in Hertfordshire. Westgate Healthcare takes the safety of their residents seriously and AIANO had already worked together with the company to develop sloping top low surface temperature (LST) guards for their fixed wall-mounted panel heaters.

The facilities manager at Westgate Healthcare presented us with a novel challenge. They wanted guards that would fit over the portable heaters they had on site, and maintain the correct amount of clearance between guard and heater to ensure that the heater guards remained safe to touch. This is especially important in a care home environment as the reflexes of pensioners can often deteriorate meaning that they often react too slowly to warm surfaces to prevent serious burns. The customer also wanted the guards to have a sloping top to prevent people sitting on the guards or putting items on top the guards, which can compromise the safe functioning of heater and guard.

AIANO proposed fitting stabilizers to the inside of the wire guards for portable heaters which would fit in place over the heater and allow the guard to sit in place. The challenge in designing the guard was to ensure that the stabilizers fit perfectly and AIANO provided the customer with a detailed measurement guide in order to collect all the information we needed about the portable heaters. The customer had a large quantity of heaters to guard and it was important to get the measurements exactly right .

Through working with the maintenance team at Westgate Healthcare AIANO were able to manufacture wire guards for portable heaters that fit in place perfectly over the heaters and always maintain the correct amount of clearance around the heater even when bumped into. As a result the retirement home is now able to keep the heaters on at times of peak demand with significantly reduced risk to residents.
