Aiano lockers for use in Network Rail offices in Birmingham

AIANO was approached to supply a number of wire mesh lockers for new Network Rail offices in the iconic building in Birmingham. Baskerville house is a Grade 2 listed building which formerly housed offices for the Birmingham City Council. The council vacated the building in 1998, which stood vacant until 2003 when it was converted into office spaces at a cost of £30 million. The building work was completed in 2007.

Network rail are taking over 3 floors of the office building 85,000 sq ft. Part of the project specification required a total of 80no wire mesh lockers to be supplied. AIANO wire mesh lockers are the result of decades of experience and a constant effort to keep our manufacturing processes at the front of innovation.

Project details

We were approached in September 2016 by Overbury, a specialist in office refits, about manufacturing the lockers. The challenges of the project were that they required a quick turnaround on the lockers and that they had very little margin for error on the size of the lockers.

The customer required individual, lockable guards on each compartment of the wire mesh lockers

The details of the order were confirmed on the 3rd of October and the handover on the project was in mid-November. This did not give us a lot of time to manufacture the lockers. Furthermore the space allowed for had been very accurately measured by Overbury. They only had a 5mm threshold of error on each locker width, which meant that every locker would need to be checked carefully before leaving the workshop.

Due to the size of the project, the lockers had to be made in batches. Limitations on space in the workshop, the quantity of lockers that could be zinc plated in a week and the size of the van used for delivering the lockers meant that they had to be manufactured and delivered in batches of 16no. This process required careful management from the team at AIANO to ensure that the project remained on schedule and each batch of lockers was progressing through the manufacturing process accurately and on time. Overbury were keen to begin installation of the lockers at the earliest possible opportunity. They required a delivery of 32 guards on the 24th and 25th October, which gave us just three weeks from receipt of order confirmation to manufacture the lockers and deliver them to the customer.

Through careful planning and keeping a close eye on production, AIANO was able to ensure that the project was completed within the timeframe provided and that the guards were made to the strict guidelines specified.
