Making the wire mesh window guards for Waterside School
Royal Borough of Greenwich came to AIANO with a very unusual problem. They were in the middle of a project to renew all the internal doors at a school in the borough, and the glass panels in the doors were being targeted by the children. The school is a special needs school working with children who have emotional and behavioural difficulties. AIANO provides a wide range of guard solutions for schools and nurseries around the country including AIANO radiator guards for Dollis Junior School and AIANO special Ball guards for St Augustines School.
The Borough approached AIANO to help find a solution to protect the windows. The guards needed to be strong and practical, and at the same time be reasonably attractive, not to spoil the pleasant environment of the school.
This proved to be a surprisingly challenging project. Each door had two elongated glass window panels, one above the other. The upper panel was longer than the lower panel. At first, representatives of the Borough and the school expressed the wish to have a single guard to cover both window panels.
AIANO welder/fabricators made up two sample wire mesh window guards – most of the doors required guarding on both sides – and our engineers went to the school to install the guards on one of the doors. However, this solution proved impracticable. The configuration of the doors was surprisingly complex. The lip around each window panel, as well as handles, locks, push plates and so on, all needed to be taken into account when planning the size and configuration of the guard. And finally, there were small variation in almost every door.
It was agreed that separate guards to cover each window panel would be a much more straightforward and workable solution. Accordingly, AIANO made new sample guards and went to fit them. This proved to be a successful solution. But in the meantime the configuration of the doors had been changed again to accommodate new special locks that had been fitted to the doors. This meant that many of the push plates and automatic fire door notice plates had been moved. This necessitated re-designing the guard fixings.
In addition, in order to fit the wire mesh window guards on each side of the door with a single bolt, the fixing lugs on one guard had to be an exact mirror image of the fixing lugs on the guard to be fitted to the other side of the door. AIANO had to check the lug positioning on every door to be sure the guards would fit, even though, on paper, every door was identical.
Once all the wire mesh window guards had been made, AIANO went to the school to install the guards. The council wanted the guards to be fitted using cross dowel nuts and joint connector bolts as the most secure method of fixing and this made for a very neat solution. Even now a few of the guards needed to be adjusted and the AIANO made a final visit to secure the last remaining wire mesh window guards in place. At the end of a complex project the Council, the school and AIANO were all pleased with the result.
AIANO works for schools, nurseries and Pre-Schools around the country. Please see other examples of our project for schools on our blog Aiano Newswire. We also stock a wide range of standard products for the most popular radiators and keep a good selection of light guards in stock too.
