AIANO were recently contacted to supply a number of bespoke heater guards for the newly renovated Hanover Primary School in Islington, London. The Victorian school is only a short drive from our AIANO workshop and so the school decided to make use of our guard installation service. Hanover Primary School Islington
AIANO supplied bespoke heater guards to Hanover Primary School which is based in a wonderful location just off Regents canal in the North London Borough of Islington. The school is housed in a Grade 2 listed 3-storey building, which has recently been refurbished. The original school building was completed in 1877. The school was built as a result of the 1870 Education Act which led to the creation of the London School Board. It was the first attempt to ensure universal education in this country. The design of the school was in the traditional ‘three decker’ design, with infant classrooms on the bottom floor and older children taught on the floors above. A roof top play area was also included in the design, as space was at a premium on the site. The original site was demolished due to land subsidence deriving from its position next to the canal. The new building was completed in 1932 slightly to the west of the original site. The new school was in the same multi level design; however changes were made in the design to allow for increased light ventilation to improve learning conditions.
Bespoke heater guards
The school had a number of radiators that presented a health and safety hazard if left unguarded. Building Services Management Ltd, a contractor working at the school contacted AIANO to provide a quote for wire mesh guards for the radiators. AIANO were able to work from photographs and measurements provided to design bespoke heater guards to fit the radiators. The radiators presented a number of design challenges as there were central heating pipes on the radiators which needed cut outs to allow the guards to fit over them. Skirting boards were also present so AIANO ensured that the cut outs from the bottom pipe extended to the floor on the right hand side of the guard, and on the left side a cut out was made in the guard to allow it to fit around the skirting board.
AIANO guard installation service
Some AIANO customers prefer to use the services of an engineer experienced in fitting radiator guards, particularly for more complex installation jobs. In these cases AIANO are often able to offer full service solution including a site survey, guard manufacture and guard installation. An AIANO engineer can deliver the guards on a day that is convenient to the customer and install them. This allows AIANO customers to minimise the disruption caused when having guards installed. This is especially important in schools where the radiators are going in classrooms which are in use for the majority of the day.
Full service solution
As well as our guard installation service, some customers make use of an AIANO guard site survey to measure up their specific requirements. This is especially useful in cases where the customer has non standard requirements and is not confident of providing accurate measurements themselves. As a result AIANO are able to offer a complete service including site survey, guard manufacture and guard installation upon request.
