The church of St. John the Evangelist, Boxmoor, Hemel Hempstead was dedicated in 1874 and is located in leafy landscaped parkland just outside Hemel Hempstead. AIANO had the opportunity to fabricate and install stainless steel church window guards for this beautiful church.

In October 2009 the church community was shaken when a fire broke out in an outbuilding and spread to the church itself. The fire destroyed a beautiful stained glass window which was built and paid for by the first vicar of the church, Alfred Cornelius Richings, in memory of his wife Susan Margaret.AIANO manufactured stainless steel church window guards at a short time period.

Extensive restoration and refurbishment work was carried both inside and outside the church. AIANO was contacted at short notice because the external work was complete, the damaged stained glass window had been replaced and it was realized the scaffolding could not be removed without stainless steel church window guards being in place to protect the restored window.

Because of the urgency of the situation AIANO had to move fast. We took the templates one Thursday in May, created the new window guards and the following Tuesday, just five days later, we were back on site to install the new stainless steel church window guards.

Aiano uses different methods of fixing depending on the requirements and constraints of each particular job.

Our preferred approached is to fix the guards using stainless steel screws and stainless steel tying wire.

The main advantage of this method is that it is almost entirely invisible from the front of the guard and, therefore creates a much cleaner, professional finish.

This fixing method can only be used when the guards are made to fit within the reveal of the window, as was the case at St. John’s.

Because of the urgency of completing the job quickly and protecting the exposed newly restored stain glass window, the main contractor in this case had decided against having the guard powder coated black.

Coating the guards black is a purely cosmetic element in the process. It does not give the guards any more protection from the elements, but it does make them less conspicuous.
