Choosing the right heater guard

Choosing the right heater guard for the environment in which your heater/radiator is located can be a tricky task if you are unsure how to proceed. AIANO have four simple steps to help in choosing the right heater guard for you.

Step 1 – Recognising what type of guard you need?

We have two main heater guard product types: Storage heater guards and Panel heater guards.

Choosing the right heater guard
  • AIANO storage heater/radiator guards are 4-sided guards that have a top, front and two sides.
  • They guards completely enclose the heater.
  • They are fixed to the wall and stand on the floor.
Choosing the right heater guard
  • AIANO panel heater guards are 5-sided guards that have a top, bottom, front and two sides.
  • The guards completely enclose the heater.
  • They are fixed to the wall and are raised off the ground.

Step 2 – Choosing the right heater guard based on the heater make/model.

The easiest way to choose the right heater guard is if you know the make/model of the heater. AIANO have a wide stock range of wire mesh heater guards, which are designed for some of the most popular heaters on the market, like Dimplex.

For example, if you have a Dimplex XLE150, we have manufactured a heater guard specifically for this Dimplex heater. On the storage heater guard page, type in XLE150 into the search bar and it will take you to the correct guard. You can also search for panel/convector heater guards in the same way.

Step 3 – Measure your heater/radiator

Another way to work out whether an AIANO standard guard will be suitable is by measuring the heater or radiator.

You will need to measure the Width (left to right), Height* and Depth (from the wall to the front of the heater). For storage heaters/radiators, measure the height from the floor to the top of the heater/radiator but for panel heaters, measure the height of the heater only.

Once you have these dimensions, you will need to look for a guard which are bigger than the heater dimensions to ensure the guard fits over the heater. It is very important to have at least 75mm (3″) gap between the heater and the guard on all sides.

Download one of our heater measuring guides below to help you gather all the dimensions needed. You can then send us this information and we can prepare a quotation for your heater guards..

Step 4 – Make sure there is clearance between the heater and guard

It is important to have some space between the heater and the guard – we call this clearance. If the guard is too close to the heater, first, there is a risk of the guard itself becoming too hot and, secondly fingers can pass through the mesh and touch the heater. We recommend a clearance distance of a minimum of 3″ (75mm) between the heater and the guard. Having clearance on heater guards is fundamental to health and safety in certain environments, such as schools and nurseries.

To work out the clearance for storage heaters/radiators:

Guard Width = Width of the heater + 150mm

Guard Height = Height from the floor to the top of the heater + 75mm

Guard Depth = Depth from the wall to the front of the heater + minimum 75-100mm

To work out the clearance for panel/convector heaters:

Guard Width = Width of the heater + 150mm

Guard Height = Height of the heater + 150mm

Guard Depth = Depth from the wall to the front of the heater + minimum 75-100mm

Bespoke heater guards

If you have a wet radiator system or a complex installation, you may need an AIANO bespoke guard. AIANO understands that some heating appliances have complex environments and standard guards from stock may not always be suitable. You may have a one or more of the following;

    • window sills or notice boards above radiators,
    • vertical and/or horizontal pipes around the radiators.
    • radiators installed on pillars or within alcoves.
    • radiators close to a door, a corner of the room, or a cupboard

If any of the above sound familiar, we would recommend you email us with photographs of the heaters/radiators and we can advise you on the most suitable option for you.
